In October 2017, representatives from the National Collective of Independent Womens Refuges (NCIWR) and Te Kupenga Whakaoti Mahi Patunga/National Network of Stopping Violence Services (TKWMP/NNSVS) met to determine the viability of creating a new national coalition which has, as its primary focus, the elimination of domestic violence throughout Aotearoa/New Zealand.

As a result of those meetings, the two bodies agreed, in December 2018 to create the National Coalition of Domestic Violence Specialist Service Providers.

The vision of the National Coalition is to advance system-level change in addressing family violence by:
1. Exploring and participating in opportunities for collaboration between the members of NCIWR and TKWMP/NNSVS as specialist family violence service providers.
2. Advocating for and implementing evidenced-based best practices in relation to family violence prevention and intervention.
3. Providing unified specialist national leadership in relation to advancing system-level change in addressing domestic violence.
